Summer 2010

So ... the summer holidays are here, at last! But what does the weather hold?

Visitor destinations remember 2009 as the year the Met Office foretold a 'barbecue summer'. The phrase caught the headlines and, following the wettest July on record, the forecasters were berated.

So then the The Met Office stopped publishing seasonal forecasts (click here for the BBC News article). "By their nature, forecasts become less accurate the further out we look," they said.

They went on to claim the UK is one of the hardest places to provide forecasts for, due to its "size and location", making it "very hard to forecast much beyond a week".

Bad news then for UK visitor destinations?

Not necessarily. JDD's research last autumn showed that, where sites had planned and taken careful management actions to improve their visitor experience, they were well rewarded - despite the wet weather.

Across the country, visitor expectations have changed and the factors that contribute to a positive visit experience have changed too. Weather need no longer be the reason people come or stay away.

It's worth a call to JDD
